Australian Medical Council (AMC) Exam for General Practitioners (GPs)

The AMC Exam is a mandatory assessment for international medical graduates (IMGs) who wish to practice as General Practitioners (GPs) or other medical professionals in Australia. It is conducted by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and ensures that candidates meet the medical knowledge and clinical competency standards required for Australian medical practice.


Exam Structure

The AMC exam consists of two main parts:

1. AMC MCQ Exam (Computer-Based Test)

  • Format: 150 multiple-choice questions (MCQs)
  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Content Areas:
    • Medicine
    • Surgery
    • Pediatrics
    • Obstetrics & Gynecology
    • Psychiatry
    • Public Health & Ethics
  • Pass Requirement: Candidates must achieve a pass mark based on a scaled scoring system.

2. AMC Clinical Exam (Practical Assessment)

  • Format: A structured clinical assessment with 16 stations (12 active stations + 4 rest stations).
  • Duration: Each station lasts around 10 minutes.
  • Skills Assessed:
    • Clinical examination and diagnosis
    • Patient management
    • Communication and ethics
  • Alternative: Instead of the AMC Clinical Exam, candidates can take the Workplace-based Assessment (WBA) in an accredited hospital.

Eligibility & Application Process

  • Candidates must have an MBBS or equivalent degree recognized by the Australian Medical Council.
  • Registration is done via the AMC website.
  • Required documents include medical degree certificates, proof of identity, and English proficiency (IELTS/OET).

Preparation Tips

  • Use AMC Handbooks and recommended textbooks (e.g., John Murtagh’s General Practice, Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine).
  • Solve past AMC MCQs and clinical cases.
  • Enroll in AMC prep courses and join study groups.
  • Gain experience in Australian medical ethics, protocols, and patient communication.

Next Steps After Passing

  1. Pass the AMC MCQ Exam → Eligible for Limited Registration.
  2. Pass the AMC Clinical Exam or WBA → Eligible for General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  3. Apply for a GP Training Program (if required for specialization).
